Please tell Westminster City Council to install safe pop-up bike lanes now, or face a tide of motor traffic as lockdown eases. The 11 kilometres of pop-up lanes announced as Westminster's 'cycling revolution' have no protective barriers, just a line of paint. Cycle routes in the draft plans have not made it to the final cut, such as Bayswater Road; and lanes announced in a press release for Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly have all been axed. As people avoid public transport, many have a straight choice between bike and car – car will win if they don't feel safe to cycle, and that means gridlock. Using the LCC 'Stop the Traffic Tide' action (button below), please adapt the LCC email to ask council leader Cllr Rachel Robathan to: - Protect the new emergency lanes with wands, barriers or 'floating' parking bays - paint is not enough - Expand the network to include roads like Bayswater Road and Aldwych that were in the draft plans - Consider timed closures on streets like Oxford Street and Regent Street to all but bikes, buses and electric taxis, as the City of London are widely doing |
