Haringey's first three 'Streets for People' schemes ('Low Traffic Neighbourhoods' or LTNs) are now all live: Bounds Green, St Ann's and Bruce Grove West Green. The aim of these schemes is to reduce through traffic and make it safer and more appealing to walk, cycle, and shop locally. As we illustrate in our recent Twitter thread, the Bruce Grove West Green LTN radically improves two key cycle routes in the borough – one running north to south from Enfield down to Hackney and the other running east to west straight across Haringey. We recognise that change is sometimes hard initially, and there are worries about possible impacts, but evidence shows that traffic and injuries tend to fall significantly inside the LTNs with little or no increase on surrounding roads – see the useful Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel website gathering evidence from multiple studies and sources. See also the open letter to COP27 from the new international coalition PATH (Partnership for Active Travel and Health), calling on governments to prioritise and invest in walking and cycling. If you have experienced any of the LTNs, it would be fantastic if you could write to your local ward councillors describing the (hopefully positive!) impact and express your support – please cc. haringey@lcc.org.uk.
