London Cycling Campaign in Lewisham

It's been a while since our last edition, mainly because we've spent a lot of the summer riding our bikes, so much so that we've struggled to get a newsletter out. 

The good news is the Council have endorsed our Climate Safe Streets pledges which we asked all parties to support at the May elections. These are virtually all included in the Mayor's manifesto. However, the previous Mayor's term saw very little progress on cycling improvements and Lewisham lags behind neighbouring inner boroughs when it comes to providing Healthy Streets.

We'll be holding the Council to account against these targets, and the best way is by all of us contacting our local councillors. Whether you want to see segregated bike lanes, secure cycle hangers, or filtered roads let your local councillor know how important our pledges are.

It's finally open. Our special celebratory ride for all takes place Sunday 23rd October. Meet at various points to join everyone on the ride up to Tower Bridge!


Consultations : Lewisham Spine
 

Lewisham to Catford Walking and Cycling Changes – A21 segregated cycle lanes, 20mph speed limit etc. (Closes 30th Nov)

This is by far our biggest campaign in Lewisham with potential to achieve a massive increase in cycling. Despite the shortcomings of the temporary pandemic scheme TfL have already reported a marked increase in cyclists on this route and no delay to buses. They need more consultation responses from us to ensure the needs of those choosing active travel are heard when considering the future of the scheme. You can respond at the link here. Upcoming Community Events 

We have an action packed schedule ahead of us with a number of rides and community events coming up.

-Our final Lewisham family cycling library events for 2022 with Climate Action Lewisham will be in Chinbrook Meadows this Saturday at the Chinbrook Apple Day from 1.30pm to 4pm (just turn up, no sign up needed) and Mayow Park on Sunday 30th October (10am to 12pm, Sign up here) . At both events you can try out trailers and our electric cargo bikes to reimagine how you can transport your kids, pets and shopping in a zero carbon way. Dr Bike will also be available at both events if your own bike just needs some TLC.  

-We'll also be at starting up regular Dr Bike sessions at Beckenham Place Park and on Cycleway 4 near Grove Street.  

Fancy getting more involved?

We always welcome volunteers who want to help with our events, whether its just meeting and greeting people at our Dr Bike Sessions, helping marshal our rides or helping us with our campaigning. To find out more, contact us via email (see below). 

Monthly meetings will now be hybrid meetings

New faces are always welcome to join the discussion on issues relating to cycling in Lewisham. The next meeting is on Wednesday 2 November, 6.30 - 8.00pm, and will be held at Lewisham Council Civic Suite in Catford, as well as online using Google Meet. October's minutes here including online joining instructions.
