Bring on the spring!

Spring is in the air and hopefully we’ll be able to extend our riding activities and workshops before too much longer. Of course cycling is essential exercise and what better way to get the whole family energised by taking them out for a spin!

Coming to a school street near you

We're very happy to see School Streets rolling out at pace in Lewisham. We're excited to see a permanent filter at Holbeach, exactly like we asked for last year (above)! We're also really pleased to see a very good proposal for Haseltine, which should enable more walking, scooting and cycling in a challenging area for active travel. It's great to see these schemes coming in across the whole borough, with another good scheme proposed for Cooper’s Lane in Grove Park. Cycleway 4 - finally some progress

LC member Andrew Seeds’ blog charts the source of new Cycleway 4 as it runs from Tower Bridge to the Rotherhithe roundabout. We’re eagerly waiting for news on when the route will be constructed along the Lewisham section which runs from Surrey Quays to Greenwich via Deptford. We’ll keep pressing TfL and Lewisham for definite plans especially now as the route is being extended in various sections to Woolwich via Charlton. Completion means safe active travel for anyone in Lewisham to get up to town quickly and safely. In the meantime head out and see what’s already in place!

Build the cycling bridge in Catford!

Lewisham Council are proposing public realm improvements to the area around the Catford stations. Top of the bill is a new canti-levered bridge bolted on to the existing road bridge allowing for a fully-segregated cycle-track on its south side. Other related elements include widening the Waterlink Way underpass under Catford Bridge, more cycle parking and lift access to Catford station. Although the Commonplace consultation has closed please email your ward councillor to encourage their support - this is a scheme to improve a dangerous pinch point.

Get riding!

We've got some recommended routes on our web site if you need inspiration for rides. But we also spotted Jon Stone's new youtube channel with some useful videos showing a good, safe route from Lewisham to Westminster following sections of the Waterlink Way and Quietway 1 up to Blackfriars Bridge, Embankment and Parliament Square. This is a rapidly developing site with more rides promised soon.

You're nicked

Unfortunately bicycle theft is at an all time high as our Facebook pages testify. Although we always lobby for secure parking facilities near shops and amenities in planning consultations Lewisham is generally not well provided. A determined thief can make short work of the toughest lock as this article from Cycling UK demonstrates. We recommend never to leave your bicycle unlocked, and always use a gold standard D lock to secure to a stand or fixed object.

Monthly meetings

Our online meetings take place every third Wednesday in the month at 6.30 - 8.00pm. Joining details are posted on our website a few days in advance. The next meeting is Wednesday 17 March, 2021. You can find the meeting records of our previous meetings here.

Resumption of Community Events, Rides & Local Activities

We are awaiting further guidance from the London Cycling Campaign main office on this one, but hopefully should have some news soon in light of recent announcements from the Government. In the meanwhile, follow us on Twitter and join our Facebook group (links below) to find out first when we do announce it.
