London Cycling Campaign in Lewisham

Happy New Year and safe and healthy riding in 2021!

Our group is growing and more of our 700 plus members are becoming actively involved. We’ve enjoyed riding together and also sharing ideas with each other for positive change. In this issue we've written to Damien Egan calling on the Lewisham Mayor to commit to active travel improvements to help us all make our journeys safely in a way that doesn’t cause gridlock and pollution. And if you want to start a campaign in your area for quieter and safer streets we’d love to hear from you. See our contact details 

Although riding together is somewhat restricted we highlight a few ideas to help you get riding if you’re venturing out for the first time. As cycling is permitted as essential exercise there’s never been a better time to go out and explore your local area by bike! Useful tips here
Priorities - what do we want?

Through discussions with our local members we’ve come up with a list of priority schemes across Lewisham that would improve travel for people on bicycles, including major roads and modal filters for many local schemes - let us know if you want to join other campaigners in your area via e-mail.
TfL Streetspace Programme
A21 Lewisham - Catford

As part of Transport for London's StreetSpace Programme, you may have seen some of the changes along the A21 aimed at improving cyclist safety. So we now have a new lane in Molesworth Street, a “floating bus stop” in Ladywell and some restricted turns at minor junctions. We think it needs further safety developments before it can safely accommodate all users, not just experienced riders. We’ve written to TfL with our concerns detailed here.
School streets

Lewisham’s School Streets programme encourages families to walk and/or cycle/scoot to school. School drop offs by car are discouraged by local timed road closures making the school entrances traffic free, safer and less polluted. 26 schools are already part of the programme so please show your support for a school you know near you, and/or suggest others that could benefit from the scheme 
Bikes for key workers

With reduced public transport people have been turning to us to help provide a bike. Through our Community Co-ordinator, Jane, we’ve refurbished, checked and supplied over 30 bikes from donations. If you have any spare bikes and/or parts we can find them a good home, and you’ll be helping key workers get to their vital work safely!    E-mail us details 
Family Cycling Library

Thanks to a successful joint bid with Lewisham Climate Action to City Hall's Walking and Cycling Grants Programme, we now have funding to establish a family friendly cycling library with a range of kit for people to borrow, see what’s available and what works for them. The grant will help establish our stock but we’re also accepting donations! If you have anything surplus especially items to help families take up cycling please email details.
Rides and Workshops

Our rides and workshops continue to be curtailed because of restrictions - but check our rides events page link  if these are relaxed. If you have any queries about fixing your bike, or anything else cycle related our Facebook followers invariably come up with helpful advice. If you’re stuck for some route suggestions see our updated website for some ideas.

Monthly meetings

Our online meetings take place every third Wednesday in the month at 6.30 - 8.00pm - joining details are posted on our website a few days in advance. The next meeting is Wednesday 17 February, 2021.
