Better Streets for Southwark

We want walking, cycling, wheeling and scooting to be the easy, natural travel choices in Southwark.

OUR ASKS

Better Streets for Southwark strives to make our streets healthy, clean and safe, for all Southwark residents. We want walking, cycling, wheeling and scooting to be the easy, natural travel choices for shorter journeys. We are supported by organisations, community groups and local residents that share our common goals. We also support residents campaigning on these issues in their own local communities in Southwark.

We’re concerned about the climate emergency, air pollution, public health and road safety and believe that improving our street environment and changing the way we travel is a critical part of the solution. We want changes to reflect the diverse needs of people from across Southwark. Our streets must also be accessible to all, and this has to include measures to ensure disabled people’s voices and concerns are taken into account.

During the Covid-19 pandemic making our streets safe for active travel is more important than ever. Without reallocated street space for active travel, the majority of Southwark households, having no access to a car and with limited capacity on public transportation, have no safe way to get around.

Our Asks will result in mode shift to active travel and must be accompanied by reductions of motor vehicle use and ownership. We support the expansion of ULEZ, smart user road charging, and other measures to reduce motor traffic volumes in Southwark.
